I am Avon Terra, a Dutch-Moluccan multimedia artist and sound engineer based in London.
My creative path began long before formal education, with listening. Music, vinyl records, album artwork, strange sounds and the worlds they seemed to contain. I became fascinated not only by songs themselves, but by atmosphere, texture and the way sound and image could alter how a moment felt.
That curiosity eventually led me to raves in the early 1990s, where sound became something physical, communal and immersive. From there, the path continued to Grafische Lyceum Rotterdam and later the School of Sound Engineering, where those early fascinations developed into a practice spanning image, sound, technology and atmosphere.
Since then, I have recorded and worked with artists across a wide range of genres, moving between classical, experimental, electronic, punk, and everything in the beautiful noise between.
Alongside my work as a sound engineer, I continue to produce my own music and visual projects. My practice explores the relationships between nature, science, memory and art, often through sound, photography, moving image and imagined systems. I am drawn to frequency, texture, repetition, signal, myth, and the quiet moments where emotion flickers into form.
My influences include Aphex Twin, Björk, Portishead, Alphonse Mucha, M. C. Escher and Bauhaus, alongside the strange poetry of yesterday’s future. I am interested in work that crosses disciplines, builds communities, and opens little portals between people, places and ideas….
I keep returning to the same questions: how does sound move through us? Where do science and feeling begin to blur? What happens when memory becomes a landscape, and art becomes a way of listening?
Sometimes it begins with a field recording. Sometimes with a flickering screen. Sometimes with pancakes and maple syrup, eyes closed, surfing a symphony of light.
